| Micky Ward, Andy Long, Robbie Morris and Falcons Academy coach Ian Peel worked through all aspects of the scrum, including safety, new law changes and body positions. Coaches and players were also treated to a demonstration of core stability exercises.
Peel, Ward and Long coached the adult players, while Morris and Danny Brown took the youngsters, with a big emphasis on safety in the scrum and correct binding. Also on hand to offer advice were Craig Wrightson, Wayne Falla and Will Halford, all referees from the Northumberland Rugby Union Referees Society.
Following the changes to scrum law this year the referees worked with the players informing them what they look for now in a game situation when refereeing front row play. They also talked about interpretation of law, while Falcons coaches explained and demonstrated the practical elements of the new laws.
The evening culminated with a 15-minute Q&A session with the Falcons coaches. Players of all ages were given the opportunity to ask questions relating to the scrum, and what it was like in a Premiership scrum.
Falcons Foundation Coach Danny Brown said: “The players were great, explaining the finer details of the scrum and the reasons for the techniques they use. Sessions like this allow club and school players to learn from professionals in a professional environment.”
