Newcastle Falcons fly half Rory Clegg made a winning start for England in Biarritz, as they beat Portugal 79-0 in the opening round of the AER European Under-18s Rugby Championship.
The Barnard Castle schoolboy converted a number of England’s 13 tries, sending his side through to Wednesday’s semi-final against Ireland in Tyrosse (kick-off 4pm UK time).

Meanwhile, there was also interest in the AER European Second Division tournament, which runs parallel to the main event and is comprised of developing rugby nations.

Sep Visser, younger brother of Falcons wing Tim, is playing in the centres for the Dutch national team, and was man-of-the-match in their 30-21 win over neighbours Belgium.

They now meet Germany in the semi-finals, with Spain and Poland contesting the other semi in that tier.
