Falcons flanker Brent Wilson

Brent Wilson leads a trio of Newcastle Falcons back rowers to have signed new deals with the club.
The former New Zealand Sevens international has put pen to paper on a new two-year contract, on the same day that back row colleagues Eni Gesinde and Ed Williamson signed three and two-year deals respectively.

The 25-year-old Wilson has made 28 first team appearances since joining from New Zealand province North Harbour last summer.

Newcastle forwards coach Peter Walton said: “Brent has proved to be a very astute signing, and gives us a number of options in the back row with his ability to play all three positions.

“He has taken his chances well this season when they have come, and is still only young so he has plenty of rugby to come.”

Gesinde and Williamson are the other back rowers to have agreed new contracts, with the 24-year-old Gesinde agreeing a three-year extension on the day they both make their comebacks from long term injuries.

“Eni has been with our academy for a long time developing as a player, and really burst on to the first team scene with a string of outstanding performances in the autumn,” said Walton of the Nigerian-born flanker.

“He provides a real threat in the line out and a very athletic option around the field. Unfortunately his progress this season has been interrupted by injury, but he continues to work hard at his game and we look forward to seeing his continual development.”

Openside flanker Williamson is the third Falcons flanker to sign up for more, with the 22-year-old former Barnard Castle pupil recovering from an injury-interrupted campaign.

“Ed is a talented openside with a big physical presence,” said Walton, a former Scotland back row international himself.

“He has had to cope with a number of injury setbacks but is now bouncing back strongly. He only has to look at Ben Woods for inspiration, who has come back from a badly broken leg to make a big impact on the Premiership, and Ed has all the potential to follow the same path.”
