Newcastle Falcons director of rugby John Fletcher will take to the saddle this Saturday, as he rides the undulating 62-mile course in the Northern Rock Cyclone Challenge.
The route starts and finishes at the Falcons’ Kingston Park stadium, taking in the hilly splendour of the Northumberland countryside as part of a three-day cycling festival.

Day one takes place today in Leazes Park in Newcastle city centre, with the Cyclone on day two before Sunday’s finale with the elite Beaumont Trophy road race.

Preparing for his 62-mile challenge, Fletcher said: “I really enjoy cycling, and the chance to get out and see the countryside in Northumberland in such a great event will be a lot of fun.

“I had been doing a bit of training to get in shape for the ride, but having just got back from holiday in Portugal a few days ago I’ve probably undone most of that good work!”
