Newcastle Falcons flanker Mike McCarthy has signed a new two-year contract, which will keep him at Kingston Park until the end of the 2007/8 season.
The 24-year-old joined the club from Irish province Connacht in the summer of 2004, going on to make 21 starts in his first season, scoring three tries.

This season has seen the former London Wasps and England Under-21s man score three times in his 16 appearances, with director of rugby, Rob Andrew, saying: “We knew Mike was an outstanding prospect when we signed him, and we’re delighted he has committed himself to the club for a further two years.

“He is one of a host of key players we will be retaining at the club as we look to the future, and we are in the process of finalising the paperwork with a number of our current squad.”

McCarthy, now back fit after suffering a calf injury, said on signing his new contract: “I’ve enjoyed my time at the club so far, and when the chance came to stay for another two years I was more than happy to take it with both hands.

“We have plenty of competition for places in the back row at the moment, but I’m determined to keep working hard to try and make myself a regular in the side.”
