| Newcastle Falcons star Tom May will cycle 550 miles in seven days for charity during the off-season, as he pedals his way from Kingston Park to Twickenham via all the Guinness Premiership clubs. |
The flying winger is raising money for local children's charity, Just For Kids, and will start his arduous journey south on Wednesday May 28.
The 29-year-old will stop at all 12 Guinness Premiership clubs, plus National One champions Northampton Saints, en-route to Rugby HQ, taking in destinations including Leeds, Stockport, Leicester, Bristol, Bath, Worcester, Gloucester, Reading, Watford and Wycombe.
Revealing his motivation for undertaking such a gruelling ride, May said: “Just before Christmas the Falcons players made a community visit to some children at the Royal Victoria Infirmary Hospital in Newcastle, and it had a profound effect on me.
“I did the same visit when I was much younger, but at that age I don't think I really appreciated the significance of it. But this time round I basically thought it was about time I got off my backside and did something to help them.
“Just for Kids seemed the ideal charity to donate to, as every penny of the money raised goes directly to kids in the North East and is not lost in other areas.
"Having lived in the region for ten years I now consider myself to be an adopted Geordie, and if I can do something positive to help local children then it will fulfil my desire to get involved properly in raising funds for an excellent charity."
Just for Kids is the official charity of Metro Radio and Magic 1152, aiming to raise and allocate funds to the thousands of children in orth East who rely on charitable support.
Recently they have equipped the therapy room in a specialist short break unit, and given eleven very special children the chance to participate in the British Transplant Games. They have bought everything from computers with educational software, sports equipment and wheelchairs to a library of toys and books for preschoolers.
Just for Kids could not continue to support such worthwhile projects without the generous donations it receives, so why not give them a helping hand?
