| Newcastle wing Tom May has outlined the task for his Falcons side on Wednesday against London Wasps, as they look to recreate the highs of Sunday's win over Leicester. |
May was one of three home try-scorers in a dramatic 28-25 victory over the Tigers, but with the team back in action just three days later, the 29-year-old insists it is a case of more of the same.
“We have had a change in coaching team which has involved bringing in a new style of play, and last Sunday against Leicester we saw that put in to practice with fantastic results,” said May, who touched down his seventh try of the season to clinch the result.
“That was really the first time that we have properly replicated what we have been doing in training during the week, but that game has gone now so we just have to be professional and reach the same levels again on Wednesday.
“Wasps on a Wednesday night, sandwiched in between two other tough Premiership games is not ideal, but as players you just have to shut your mouth and get on with it.
“We know what Wasps will bring to the table having already played them twice this season, but we are comfortable with how we played last weekend and it's just a case of trying to put in another performance like that.
“It's so frustrating to know that we can play like that one week, and then drop off the next. I was chatting to a few Leicester fans in the bar after the game, and they couldn't believe we were tenth in the Premiership when they'd just seen us beat their first-choice team and put in a really convincing 80 minutes of rugby.”
With the build-up to that game being dominated by news of a trio of departures from the Falcons squad for next season, May insisted that any talk of a club in turmoil is well wide of the mark, and that the players are all on board buying in to its future.
“It's just one of those things in a professional game, like in any business really, that people come and go,” he said.
“Three players have chosen to take advantage of opportunities elsewhere, that's up to them and all you can do really is wish them well. We have a very close-knit group of players here at this club, the team spirit is outstanding and we're all committed to the future of Newcastle Falcons.
“The players and coaches sat down this morning and talked about it, the team as a united group gave its full backing to this club and now we're just looking forward to these next two games and preparing ourselves for a big start to next season.
“From the outside the perception is perhaps that we are not a progressive club, and some of the recent media coverage has reflected that, but those of us around the place every day know differently because we're aware of what ambitions are in place and being worked on every day behind the scenes.
“The guys running the club and coaching the team know what they are doing, they are looking to recruit quality players to add to this squad and I'm sure we will see the benefit of that next season.”
May also added his praise for acting director of rugby Steve Bates, stating: “The players are completely and utterly behind him, 100 per cent.
“Batesy has had a massive effect on us. I appreciate that might sound like a strange thing to say when results haven't gone our way prior to last weekend, but you can't put that down to players not being coached properly or not being behind him.
“He's a great coach, he has the full backing of the players and it's just not an issue that has been mentioned at all in the changing room.” |
