| A host of Falcons players starred for the KooGa Wailers in Wales on Saturday, as they reached the final of the Cwmtawe Sevens. |
For the second year in a row the Wailers were beaten by the British Army in the final, with a number of players loaned from the Falcons and the local club scene.
Speaking after the tournament, Falcons junior academy manager and Wailers coach Mark Laycock said: “We played really well during the day with some outstanding performances, but just ran out of steam in the final.
“Hats off to the British Army, they played outstanding Sevens and were by far the better side. They gave us a bit of a lesson in organisation and keeping the ball, and we know they will be one of the main sides to watch in the Middlesex Sevens on August 16 as the Falcons look to defend the title.”
The Wailers had earlier dispatched RLC Warriors and Kaiviti Crusaders in the group stages, before showing outstanding defence to beat Neath 10-0 in the quarter-finals and Samurai 28-7 in the semis before losing a one-sided final 53-12.
Among the outstanding performers was Blaydon wing Andrew Fenby who scored nine tries for the Falcons Development Team in two games last season, taking on defenders and scoring heavily, while Middlesex Sevens winner Paddy Dias proved a real workhorse in the forwards.
