Despite a gallant first half which saw them only 8-6 down at half-time, the Falcons were forced on the back foot in a second half which saw Worcester’s traditional rolling maul game to the fore.
A cagey start saw the sides feel each other out without really threatening the line, Danny Williams almost clawing in an interception inside his own half while skipper Hall Charlton probed the corners with a string of tactical grubbers.
It was not until the 15th minute that the deadlock was finally broken, as a Rob Miller penalty from 30 metres out on the right rewarded a spell of Falcons pressure with a Worcester forward having dropped a knee in the ruck.
The hosts drew level within seven minutes as fly half Willie Walker slotted an elementary penalty from out in front, and Newcastle were forced to battle for the following ten minutes with just 14 men as debutant Mark Wilson was sin-binned for hands in the ruck.
Worcester capitalised on their numerical advantage almost straightaway with a try in the left corner, a blindside break from skipper Pat Sanderson seeing the ball worked to winger Miles Benjamin in space.
Walker misfired with his touchline conversion attempt, but the Falcons had to pull out all the stops to stem the tide as great line speed from Adam Balding and a hack ahead from Mark Sorenson prevented a subsequent score in the same corner.
Miller had the distance but not the direction from a long-range penalty, the Cumbrian finding the 51 metres with ease but firing his effort just left of the posts.
He made amends two minutes before the break, however, with a sweetly-struck penalty from just outside the 22 on the left, narrowing the deficit to just two points as the Falcons trailed 8-6 at the break.
Worcester started the second half on the front foot, using a spell of pressure in the visiting 22 to good effect as Walker slotted into the pocket to dink over a straightforward drop goal.
Newcastle countered admirably right from the restart, Danny Williams breaking down the right wing and feeding in Alex Tait only for the centre to be hauled down a metre short of the try line.
Choosing to exert their considerable scrum dominance by calling for the set-piece from a string of close-range penalties, a powerful Falcons eight was unlucky not to shove its way over try line as a retreating home pack conceded a barrage of resets without referee Gwyn Morris marching them under the sticks.
It was a resurgent Worcester, however, who breached the try line next, as the hosts were rewarded for turning down a shot at goal when their decision to take a close-range line out saw flanker Tom Wood driven over in the left corner.
Walker slotted the touchline conversion to extend the lead to 12, , and the Falcons’ cause was done no favours when replacement hooker Rob Vickers was sent to the sin bin with 15 minutes to go for a scuffle on the floor with Chris Fortey.
Newcastle were forced to defend their own line for prolonged periods in the closing stages as Worcester’s rolling maul game clicked into gear, and the pressure proved too much as replacement scrum half Ollie Frost was driven over in the right corner, Walker converting.
It was 14 versus 14 for much of the dying embers of the game as home centre Sam Tuitupou was yellow-carded for a high shot on fullback Tom Catterick, but Worcester’s forward momentum showed no sign of diluting as replacement flanker Jake Abbott was driven over in the right corner for the four-try bonus point just before the final whistle.
